Dr Nabeel Ibrahim
Specialist Surgeon. MB BCh, FRACS, FRCS

Dr Nabeel Ibrahim MB, BCh, FRACS, FRCS. is an Australian qualified Specialist Surgeon who completed his training in surgery at St Vincent’s Hospital, Sydney in 1980. Further postgraduate study and training was undertaken over several years at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, England and at the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, USA.

On return to Australia in 1983, Dr Ibrahim took up the position of Senior Surgical Registrar at Lewisham Hospital and Clinical Tutor at the University of NSW later taking a full consultant position at 2 major Sydney hospitals. In 1986 Dr Ibrahim developed and introduced minimal access groin hernia repair using a mesh technique as a day procedure with the obvious advantages of early return to normal activity and reduction in hospital costs. This new technique was presented by him at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons in Canberra in May 1992.

Dr Ibrahim also pioneered minimally invasive endoscopic surgery (keyhole surgery) in 1991 and applied the principle to treatment of groin hernias and subsequently to all abdominal wall hernias. The results of his new work and techniques were presented jointly with Dr P Lewinsky to the Royal Australian College of Surgeons Annual Congress in May 1997 following which he was invited to present and demonstrate the technique at several international laparoscopic surgery conferences.

Over the past 15 years, Dr Ibrahim has performed approx 4000 laparoscopic operations in Sydney both in the public and private hospital sector. Dr Ibrahim has published extensively in medical journals and has presented his work both nationally and internationally. He continues to keep up-to-date with the latest techniques by regularly attending conferences and visiting surgeons at leading hospitals and clinics in Europe and USA.

Laparoscopic hernia repair has been shown to be associated with less post operative pain, earlier return to normal activity, cosmetic benefits and superior non-recurrence rates in comparison with conventional techniques. Evidence has demonstrated that both techniques are equally operatively safe.
